The Penny Lane Coat

The Penny Lane coat has been part of The Hippie Shake since the very beginning. In fact, the first piece we ever sold when we launched our website over 10 years ago was a vintage denim one we found at the bottom of pile of clothes in a warehouse in North Wales.

Back then we only sold vintage, and Naomi spent years collecting Afghan coats and wearing them until they quite literally fell apart. So when we began designing our own collections, creating our own Penny Lane coat was one of the first things we dreamed about making.

Over the years we’ve taken them in so many different directions, from velvet and tapestry to embroidery, patchwork and longer lengths. They’ve become a huge part of The Hippie Shake and are still some of our favourite pieces to design.

Penny Lane Coat reviews
It’s the most beautiful coat ever! Also, it’s so soft that it’s so relaxing to feel. It’s worth every penny. I am so glad I invested in it as my forever coat

This is my third coat from The Hippie Shake. I love them! My 2 older coats are in Sweden and I missed them last winter in the USA so I bought this beauty. Also because black goes with everything.

Beautiful coat!! Fits perfect and looks amazing. I can't wait to wear it this fall and winter.

Where It All Began

Our love for Penny Lane coats goes right back to the things that inspired The Hippie Shake in the first place: vintage clothing, music, travel and the films we’ve watched over and over again.

Almost Famous has always been one of those films for us. We love the clothes, the music and the whole world it captures, and Penny’s coat is obviously one of those pieces that stays with you.

Alongside that, we’ve always been obsessed with original Afghan coats from the 60s and 70s, with their beautiful embroidery, shaggy trims and worn-in fabrics. Those references have continued to inspire the coats we design today.

Over The Years

Our Penny Lane coats have changed a lot over the years.

We’ve experimented with richer fabrics, longer lengths, bigger collars, embroidery, tapestry and new colour combinations, while always keeping the details that made us fall in love with this style in the first place.

Some have become long-standing favourites, others only appeared as limited edition pieces, and every new coat has helped shape where we take them next.

Loved by You

One of our favourite things is seeing where your Penny Lane coats end up. From gigs and festivals to weddings, road trips and everyday adventures, you’ve made these coats part of so many memories over the years.

We also love seeing how differently you all wear them. Some of you throw them on with old denim and boots, others dress them up, and a surprising number of you now own more than one.

That still blows our minds a little. Seeing these coats become pieces you genuinely live in is such a huge part of why we still love making them.

Made to Be Lived In

We’ve never wanted our Penny Lane coats to be pieces you save for best. From the fabrics and trims to the fit and finishing, every detail is considered so they feel just as good to wear as they look.

More Than Just a Coat

Our Penny Lane coats have changed a lot over the last seven years, but the idea behind them never has. I’ve always wanted them to be pieces you make memories in and keep with you for years

Seeing how much they’ve become part of The Hippie Shake, and part of your wardrobes, is really special.
